Employment/Volunteer Involvement

Below is the list of available jobs in Ice River Valley. There are more jobs listed than there are places in the game for characters - this is just to give some choice. Feel free to have your character run a business that is not listed below, but be sure to run it passed the mods first. Anything marked with an asterisk (*) could possibly be a part-time job for students, or people who work two jobs.

Also note that store names can be changed if the character who owns it gives it a different name. You may also feel free to give us a new description of the store/restaurant.

Jobs with Downtown Businesses

Mendelsohn's Outfitters

This store has been a mainstay on Main Street since 1923, supplying tourists, mountaineers, and locals alike with anything/everything they need to fully enjoy the park, from fishing tackle to sleeping bags to snowboards. In recent years, the store has diversified and now carries a great deal of clothing and outerwear from companies like Roxy, The North Face, etc.

Positions:
Owner: Gabe Mendelsohn [[info]gmendelsohn]
*Sales Associates: Jimmy Peaks [[info]jimmypeaks

Ice River General Store

The Ice River General Store is the oldest existing business in the village, having been started at the town's founding. While it has gone through a variety of owners, it has over time remained a mainstay in the community. It is the main location for grocery shopping (their produce selection is legendary, and their meat selection is very impressive), and is also the only place in town where alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, and distilled liquors) can be purchased in the park.

Positions:
Owner(s): Daniel Hayes [[info]dannyhayes]
*Stockpeople: (2)

Ice River Reflections

Anyone who has ever gone to a tourist town has been into one of these shops. Souvenirs are much more profitable than one would imagine.

So much more than just a computer store/repair shop, 8-Bit sells video and computer games, gaming systems, new DVD releases, as well as holding weekly gaming nights for D&D and WoW. Fine Tuned

Fine Tuned has been the town's stop for all their musical needs since 1966. It's a place where you can still find most anything to suit your taste. The store carries a wide variety of new and old music in several forms, mostly CD, but also Vinyls and Cassettes. It houses one very old piano which costumers can play but is not for sale. Musical Instruments are available on order through the store. The motto is, and has been since 1966, "If we don't have it, give us a week."

The first bar in Ice River was opened in 1834 by James Paddington, a retired logger and founding citizen of Ice River. Named in his honour, Paddington's Bar is a laid-back town pub, with comfortable booths, walls covered in cheesy signs and photographs of patrons, and sixteen different kinds of beer on tap. They man a variety of warden stations through the park, respond to requests for assistance, ensure that poaching does not take place, and enforce park rules. They are admittedly a bit of a joke with the village people; they don't tend to take their jobs terribly seriously, much to the chagrin of their boss, Park Supervisor Weiss.

Volunteer Associations

Listed below are the community groups available to characters in the game. People are encouraged to get their characters involved as to create a better social network for them. Some volunteer positions are paying, while others are not. Feel free to get your characters really involved, but keep in mind that there are only so many hours in the day!

Paying Volunteer Opportunities
Ice River Volunteer Fire Department

Due to the small size of the village, Ice River does not have a full-time fire department. Instead, it relies upon a network of volunteer fire fighters, who are trained to fight fires, conduct search-and-rescue missions in the park, and respond to automobile accidents. All are given a pager, and when there is a call - day or night - they head straight to the fire hall. They are paid for every hour they work, and local businesses are generous enough to allow firefighters to leave work, not show up for work, and show up late because of fire calls.

Fire Chief: (1) (Responsible for coordinating the fire fighters)
Fire Captains: [info]gmendelsohn (1 available)
Regular Volunteers:[info]neverett, [info]jemimah, [info]leonatus

Local Government

Village Council meets every second Tuesday of the month, with the last meeting of each month being open to the public who can submit petitions or raise concerns. There are four councillors, each elected every two years, and a Reeve, who acts as the mayor. None of these jobs are full time positions, and many local businesspeople tend to hold them, but they are important to the community. Elections for new councillors and a reeve will take place on February 15th.

Reeve: Gary Outram
Councillors: TBD, February 15th.

Unpaid Volunteer Opportunities

Ice River Legal Association

The IRLA mission is to provide legal services to individuals, families and groups in the greater Ice River area who are unable to obtain legal services because of limited income, age, disability, discrimination and other barriers. IRLA is a small office of lawyers, paralegals and support staff. IRLA services are free of charge for those who are eligible. IRLA provides a limited range of legal services including full representation, advice, brief service, community education and policy advocacy.

Executive Director: (one - only paid position through governmental grants)
Volunteers: Carrie Martin (RCMP Constable) [[info]cmmartin], others needed for reception/filing/office work and other help.

RCMP Auxiliary Constable Program

Auxiliary Constables are unpaid, civilian volunteers who under the supervision of regular officers, assist in community policing. This might mean working on a street patrol, crowd control at events, giving community safety talks, and most significantly for Ice River, helping organize and conduct search-and-rescue operations or assist in times of emergency. They wear an RCMP uniform with the 'Auxiliary' badge on their shoulder, and are a key component of community policing in Ice River. To learn more, click here.

Auxiliary Constables: Available

Wolverines Hockey

Every Thursday evening, a group of men in the community get together to play a game of hockey at the arena. It is more of a social thing than anything else - players usually go out for drinks at Paddington's afterwards. When in season, the Wolverines Mens' Hockey Team plays exhibition games against teams in Banff, Golden, and Jasper. For those who are unfamiliar with the sport, a run down of the game and positions can be found here.

Ice River Outdoors Club

This club basically gives an excuse for members of the community to go on some sort of monthly adventure, whether it is mountain climbing, mountain biking, hiking, orienteering, winter camping or backpacking into a remote area of the park. They are sponsored by the Outfitting store, and always welcome new members, if they can handle how hardcore the club members seem to get about their trips.

Many volunteers also act as foster parents for animals in situations where there is not enough space for them all.
